• Cool collection of space colony concept art from a study that NASA/Ames and Stanford University conducted in 1977. A PDF of the study is available here. I love these optimistic looks at living in outer space. These kinds of massive, toroid-shaped space stations feature prominently in a lot of sci-fi. I like the juxtaposition of the familiar earth-like houses and plazas under the giant windows and artificial sky of the inner ring.

  • The recent news of the closing of all 99 Cent stores reminds me of this photo by Andreas Gursky. I saw it years ago, I forgot in which museum, and it’s really impressive cause it’s a couple feet wide. Back in 2006 it sold for $2.2 million.

  • Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in movies and shows. Of course the iconic Guggenheim has been in several movies, and the Ennis House was Deckard’s apartment in Blade Runner. I’ve been to the Marin County Civic Center and it’s really cool to see it in person. It’s open to the public so you can wander around and take pictures.

  • The Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is coming to PC on May 16. A PlayStation exclusive since its release in 2020, Ghost of Tsushima is the newest in Sony’s ports of first party games to PC. It’ll include a lot of graphical enhancements for PC such as DLSS, FSR, ultrawide monitor support, and unlocked framerates. I don’t have a PlayStation so I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. I wanna play it just cause it’s an open world samurai game set in feudal Japan, that’ll be a nice change of pace from the usual. Plus the game looks gorgeous and I love that there’s a “Kurosawa Mode” that changes everything to black and white.

  • Amazon released the full trailer for the Fallout series. I have hundreds of hours of playtime in Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4 so I’m really looking forward to the show. The series takes place in Los Angeles, a location Bethesda hasn’t visited yet in the games, so it’ll be interesting to see a new setting. They definitely captured the 50s retro futuristic look of the games and they have a lot of the elements (bobbleheads, mutants, robots, the vault and the blue jumpsuits, the Brotherhood of Steel and their power armor.) Now let’s see if they got the tone right. All episodes come out April 11 on Amazon Prime.

  • I grew up in Pasadena and Eagle Rock and when I was a kid I went to Eagle Rock Park a lot. I had no idea the park clubhouse was designed by famous architect Richard Neutra. The mid-century modernist style building opened in 1953 with its sleek horizontal lines, cantilevered roof overhangs, and thin supporting columns allowing an unimpeded view of the Eagle Rock and surrounding hills. Unfortunately, after 71 years the building needs some restoration work.
