Within a few decades we could be taking an elevator into space, according to this article. Using a super-strong carbon-nanotube composite, one end of the cable would be anchored to the surface of our planet. The cable would rise into space in a geosynchronous orbit, staying stationary over a position on Earth. Gravity on one end and centripetal acceleration on the other keeps the cable taut. Then the elevator just climbs up the cable with its payload of spy satellites and whatever. No word on what kind of music they\’ll play in the elevator though.
