Scientists at the Getty Conservation Institute determined that this is the very first photograph. It was created in 1826 by Joseph Nicephore Niepce who used a process called heliography. He covered a pewter plate with a photo-sensitive tar called bitumen, then exposed it for 8 hours. The unexposed bitumen was dissolved with lavender oil, and the result was a negative of the French countryside and the world\’s first photograph.
