• Rio recently introduced 7 new mp3 players, mostly tiny flash memory-based things. The most promising one is the Karma, which has a 20 GB hard drive and a 16 hour battery life. It includes a dock with RCA plugs and an ethernet port, so you can actually assign it an IP address and plug it into your network. It looks like a serious iPod contender. Pictures of the dock here and here, and a size comparison here.

  • Shaun Irving built a pinhole camera out of a mail truck. It makes massive 4\’ x 8\’ negatives and he can actually stand inside it while taking pictures. A pinhole camera is the simplest camera you can make. All you need is a light-tight box, photo paper, and a tiny hole to let light in. It\’s like the art version of DIY bongs.

  • I used to joke about portable record players but someone\’s actually made one. Well, portable being a relative term. It\’s more portable than other record players anyway. It runs on 6 D batteries and has a speaker and a headphone jack.

  • Heh heh, gotta love California: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gary Coleman, Gallagher, and Larry Flynt are all running for governor. This is gonna be an interesting election.

All 4 have Simpsons connections too. Arnold is clearly the inspiration for McBain, Gary Coleman and Gallagher have been on the show, and Larry Flynt was mentioned once (\”Larry Flynt is right!\”).

  • The Lost America book was released last June. I picked up a copy yesterday and it\’s well worth it. It\’s a trade paperback filled with color and b&w; photos, as well as some excellent writing. I\’ve mentioned Lost America on my blog before. Troy Paiva takes incredible night photos of assorted junk and abandoned buildings scattered throughout the desert.

  • Great article about the inkjet printer scam and the tricks they use, such as a low ink warning when there\’s plenty of ink left.
